Do you like to travel alone? (Australia Part 2)

Lest you think I have completely abandoned my posts on our December Australia trip...

----overdue post as we've been back for 3.5 months---

Jamie had a couple more days of his project left so he continued his commute to the client site while I had free reign on all of Sydney by my lonesome. It. Was. Fantastic. I easily managed the public transit system there, figured out the challenge of simple things like looking the opposite direction while crossing the street (gasp! honk! eek!), and even mastered the international method of buying a SIM card for mobile phones (honestly, the most economical way to handle mobiles ever).
  • Jamie et al. immediately tied into Vodafone when they landed and most companies have free company-to-company calling or texting so I only did a superficial price comparison before identifying the best plan for me at the same company.
  • They all got pay-as-you-go mobiles as soon as they landed. Dinky flip phone things that didn't handle data, limited the number of minutes they could make phone calls, and now they own these dinky phones. Silly tuckies.
  • I came in with my global-enabled iPhone, having called Verizon before leaving the country to unlock the device (important to do for Verizon customers!), picked up a SIM card for $1, and bought a $14 data plan.
  • This $14 included: free calls & texts to Vodafone customers (uh...everyone I knew in the country), 450 mobile minutes which included international calling (if only I could figure out the time difference), 150MB of data (don't really know what that means, but didn't come close to using it all), and free access to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, LinkedIn, and Myspace (huh?).
  • What more could I have possibly needed? SO CHEAP.
ok, enough about the phone.

I started off each morning with a flat white or a long black:
Might I add that we have limited coffee options in Hanover?
These were über-luxury moments.

And set out on full day-long excursions on my own:

Old.
(notice which side of the street the cars are on)

New.

Um...oldish/new?
Don't know how to qualify artificial floral walls.

With my map-ready mobile device, complete with foursquare capability, I hardly did any research before hitting the streets. I chose to do more of a go-as-I-please couple of days, popping in and out of shops, taking in some local magazines at delicious coffee joints, soaking up some sunshine in the local parks, and enjoying the fact that I was in a fun metropolitan area.

Had to try a mini pie from Pie Face.
It's like the Starbucks of hand pies; they're EVERYWHERE and conceptually v.cool.
Taste = meh...probably really good hangover food.

Rechargeable batteries in glittery colours.
"Regular" batteries were hard to find. Other countries are fun.

I had done the most efficient job of almost immediately adjusting my clock by forcing myself awake while hopping on and off of planes until Sydney bedtime and crashing on the longer flight over. Unfortunately I only had a window seat for my to-canada and cross-canada flights and a MIDDLE SEAT for the 15 hour journey. It took a whole lotta "getting zen" and maybe some light pharmaceuticals to get there, but the effort was well worth its weight in gold once I got across the ocean.

Racks of false eyeballs (designer contacts).

"Naturally", they were next to the thousands of false eyelashes.

Waking up slightly early each morning, I was able to cram in so much exploring before meeting up with friends for post-work dinner, drinks, and going out. And while I did my fair share of window shopping, the multiple flights remaining on my agenda prohibited me from doing much purchasing. That and the insane exchange rate that made everyday items 150% more expensive than in the US. Oh, and our grad school family budget. All these things, limiting my natural tendencies.

This drugstore-brand-in-the-usa nail bar was in a high-end department store makeup section.
The row of nailpolish moved about on a track like toy train.

There were juicing bars everywhere with piles of fresh veggies/fruits!

Cucumber? Apple? Kale? Lime?
I love these things!
So exciting!

BLEAGH.
It was horrible.

I bet even this prehistoric bird would even toss out my kale, apple, celery juice:
BLEAGH. CACAW!

One Kings Lane - a review.

Have you guys ever used OneKingsLane.com?
The company matches undiscovered vendors who typically sell only through interior designers or specialty retailers with consumers who wouldn't normally have access to their wares. Like Gilt, it offers discounts on the items, and sales last only a few days. -fortune.com
This is a photo journal entry of my first order with them:

My new planner is here!
Red, leather moleskin; typically $39, but on sale for $7.

I try to get my shopping fill through online retailers,
but struggle to find the joy in opening a box vs rifling through racks.

There's always so much packaging.

I try to reuse as much as possible.

omg.
More packaging!

My planner is in here somewhere, right?

At some point?

At least these guys don't use styrofoam peanuts.
I hate those things.

Eeek!! Planner time! I'm going to be so organized!!

w.t.f.

This is not a planner.

Looks like a friggin' travel candle.

A friggin' travel candle?

ANNOYED!

Called OneKingsLane immediately and the operator couldn't stop cracking up while apologizing. Said the packer included my complimentary candle, but must have plumb forgotten to put my order in the box. Forgotten?! Forgotten. AND they were all out of my planner so they couldn't even send another to me.
Annoyed!

To top it off, I had misdialed the first time I called, off by one number, and was inadvertently connected to a sex hotline. A quick hang-up and redial got me to the laugh-y operator, but as soon as I hung up with him, I started getting RAPID FIRE TEXT MESSAGES of this nature:

Giving you the boot.

In the ongoing quest to find the right equipment to survive the unfamiliar weather around here, I've definitely taken advantage of online shoe sources and their gracious (albeit, necessary 'round these parts) policy of free shipping and free returns through the mail. Many a winter boot have come and gone from my front door; some not comfy enough, some with not enough tread (regardless of how tread-y it looked online), and some that simply didn't fit my hefty calves. Finally, one popped onto my gams and it looks like they're going to stick around!
For the record, they're TIMBERLAND.
I SO live in New Hampshire.
My sister even said, "Um...leslie, are you keeping "fashion" in mind when doing all this online shopping?"
Ha.
Things I like about it:
  • Super grippy soles using Green Rubber™ material. Green Rubber™ compound is made using DeLink™ technology—a process that converts scrap rubber, to a recycled compound that can then be reused in rubber products .42% Recycled Materials™ material, which contains at least 85% post-consumer timer crumb by weight.
  • One or more major component (i.e. outsole, upper, lining, midsole or sockliner) contains at least 50% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the plastic used to make soda bottles. The label says 1.5 water bottles are in my boots. Fun.
  • They're taller than my Uggs, coming up to 4" below my knee; meaning more coverage and less cold!
  • The furry business up top is stretchy and fits my calves comfortably.
  • Pull-on! No laces! It's like the step before velcro and perfect for this lazy shoe person.
  • Waterproof. I haven't had to test this out yet, but according to those in the know, the slush-post-snow is a bear and I'll be glad to have waterproof boots.
  • Super cold proof. It was 19 degrees when we left home this morning and my feet were nice and toasty!
Things I don't like:
  • With the wool lining and a thin pair of wool socks, I'm getting super warm indoors. What to do....
  • Not high heeled. Sad face.
  • No pointy toe. Also sad face.
Now I need to find some gloves! Criteria: bendy enough to not feel like I'm wearing mittens, warm, location alert (i tend to lose things...). Suggestions? Have you seen any out there that I need to try?

Flag on.

There are some things that come across my inbox and they just make me happy, inspired, and wanting to just lock myself in a craftroom with ribbon and fabric and paint and awesome people.
"gran's recipe flag"
available for purchase here.

Doing my part.

I have an aversion to produce bags. You know, the flimsy plastic bags that you use to gather 6 apples so they don't go all rolling around in the cart? I hate them. They never separate for me, they clog up the bag drawer in the kitchen, and no matter how many I "save" because surely there's a use for them in the future, they just clog up the kitchen and stick to everything and I hate them. Huge run-on sentences won't even begin to help describe my dislike for these bags.

Are you feeling me here, people?

Most of the time, I've resorted to just throwing the produce in my basket sans-bag; much to the disdain of the checkout people. I don't like dirty looks, I hate the stupid plastic bags, so you can imagine my squeal of delight when I came across this terrific find:
Produce Bags: Set of 5 - Click Image to Close
Breathable mesh, drawstring, perfect size, flexible fabric. They're terrific for groceries and I imagine would be great for travel as they're so lightweight and you could easily see what's in the separate containers. I love the colored tabs (just fun), the fact that I can wash the produce directly in the bag, and that they're machine washable. SCORE!

There are loads of different reusable bags out there and I'd highly encourage you to find your own fave. This particular set is by flip&tumble (google for local sources) and ran just over $10. I'm sure the crafty folks out there will be able to whip up their own set for much less.

took this while jen heckled me from her car.
"leave that flower alone!"
sorry, friend. i liked the light.

Antique-tack-toe.

There's this antique store down the street from our place. It sat there, inviting, but unvisited by me for years. Then, all of a sudden, I stepped in and became immediately addicted. Old school fans, filing cabinets, lighting, piggy banks, HUGE lamps? I wanted to bring all of it home.

Now, my experience with "antiquing" and thrift stores is mixed at best. I grew up in strip mall county with our nation's highest grossing shopping mall (revenue of about 1.5 billion dollars per year). My thrift store went by the name of Urban Outfitters and otherwise we drove up to Venice to stare at old hats and shoes. Then camp happened and I got my hands on some beautifully "unique" tees and other random goodies; triggering a small, but distinct love for this ritual.

Don't worry, folks. I'm baaaack.

Nyc Part Deux 2009

While we generally disagree on a multitude of things on a daily basis, there are very many things I have in common with the guy I'm marrying. Number of hours our tv is on ESPN, for example...disagree. Pizza for dinner AGAIN...disagree. Dishes in the sink vs. the dishwasher each night....DISAGREE. Wait. I was going somewhere with this.

Ah. The things we have in common.

LOVE OF NEW YORK!
love of subways!
love of streetsigns?
Nope. BBQ!!!

We obviously didn't get enough of our favorite city earlier this year so when Jamie was called to Jersey for 1.5 days of work, I suggested extending the trip and joining him over there. I was already going to be in Nevada ("that much closer to the east coast" was my rationale), he hated that he was going to spend longer traveling than time in the meeting, and my flights on Virgin + JetBlue were incredibly priced. Including a $50 fee for changing a flight, total travels cost $275. That's right....flew Virgin to Vegas on Thursday, Jetblue to JFK on Saturday, and Virgin home again on Tuesday.

Good thing I kept a copy of my itineraries taped to the inside of my jacket (Away We Go reference, anyone?).

MmmMMmmm...smells great in this subway.

As soon as I figured out that we could be there for the 7th annual BIG APPLE BBQ Festival, I don't think my fingers could type or click fast enough to book those flights!! BBQ!!

Left Vegas on a plane to JFK then a subway ride to a midtown hotel room where Jamie was waiting to go get dinner. 11pm arrival, dropped my bags, and took off again for the East Village + Arepas! So.worth.everything. Best Satnight dinner. We found a terrific frozen yogurt place, held hands, and strolled through the streets FILLED with folks going out + partying. Perfect people watching. But no partying for us...a few more meandering moments then to bed.

Faux Bill Cosby sighting.

Sunday was an absolute 'nother story! Lots of partying for us on Sunday!! Luckily the BBQ Festival was weekend long so we were able to get Trish down from Connecticut to join us...and our partying!

Grubbin' on some ribs.
Almost ditched my new fiance for this guy + his shirt.
it's so green here in the summers.
We found Trish's brother + girlfriend on the corner of Ribs Ave and Coleslaw Way.
One Arizonan, Two Kentukyans, and an Connecticutan = lost.
Get yourselves here asap.
As I mentioned awhile back, I LOVE this store.
So many points of inspiration for future crafting!
Lots of long, dangly chandeliers....envy.
Don't worry, we sent Jamie to some more boy-affiliated shopping.
We thought this looked like a mini version of Devon's wedding gown.
Don't you think??

We said our "see ya laters" to Trish Sunday afternoon.

I found my obligatory red velvet cupcake.
And we wrapped up our day with some glorious sunshine in Washington Park.
We love this town.
