In the ongoing quest to find the right equipment to survive the unfamiliar weather around here, I've definitely taken advantage of online shoe sources and their gracious (albeit, necessary 'round these parts) policy of free shipping and free returns through the mail. Many a winter boot have come and gone from my front door; some not comfy enough, some with not enough tread (regardless of how tread-y it looked online), and some that simply didn't fit my hefty calves. Finally, one popped onto my gams and it looks like they're going to stick around!

For the record, they're TIMBERLAND. I SO live in New Hampshire. My sister even said, "Um...leslie, are you keeping "fashion" in mind when doing all this online shopping?" Ha. |
Things I like about it:
- Super grippy soles using Green Rubber™ material. Green Rubber™ compound is made using DeLink™ technology—a process that converts scrap rubber, to a recycled compound that can then be reused in rubber products .42% Recycled Materials™ material, which contains at least 85% post-consumer timer crumb by weight.
- One or more major component (i.e. outsole, upper, lining, midsole or sockliner) contains at least 50% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the plastic used to make soda bottles. The label says 1.5 water bottles are in my boots. Fun.
- They're taller than my Uggs, coming up to 4" below my knee; meaning more coverage and less cold!
- The furry business up top is stretchy and fits my calves comfortably.
- Pull-on! No laces! It's like the step before velcro and perfect for this lazy shoe person.
- Waterproof. I haven't had to test this out yet, but according to those in the know, the slush-post-snow is a bear and I'll be glad to have waterproof boots.
- Super cold proof. It was 19 degrees when we left home this morning and my feet were nice and toasty!
- With the wool lining and a thin pair of wool socks, I'm getting super warm indoors. What to do....
- Not high heeled. Sad face.
- No pointy toe. Also sad face.
Now I need to find some gloves! Criteria: bendy enough to not feel like I'm wearing mittens, warm, location alert (i tend to lose things...). Suggestions? Have you seen any out there that I need to try?

i think these are an excellent choice! love that they are environmentally friendly also-how on earth do you find things like this? :)
will think about gloves. i tend to wear a super thin pair underneath a warmer pair.
I love these. I just got Hunter's in graphite, with very cute socks, but not for actual rain, I just thought they looked cute... You don't need a heel, you'd fall on your butt if you hit ice, and pointy toe not good for feet anyway. Have you tried thin silk socks? I just got Fingerless gloves, you could layer over thinner gloves. Jcrew.
can you pack shoes to wear for once you get to where you're going?
speaking of rain boots, hunters make huntress. huntress are bigger in the calf, but shorter. i've found that my new marc jacobs rain boots are roomier in the calf and shhh i kind of like them better than my hunters. but even with the cozy liners, my hunters can't keep me warm in the winter. and i am still wearing my waterproff black boots that i got the winter i moved here, and this will be the 5th winter! is that right? NEXT WINTER i am getting new winter boots! mine are gonna have 2 waterbottles in them :)
i have no suggestions but i did just get a snood in nyc because i was foolish enough to think i didn't need a hat one day (i almost lost both ears to the cold).
i am coveting these boots...seriously. i look at them every day figuring that if i look at them enough they will magically appear on my doorstep.

les! what a new girl you're becoming, i'm so proud :). timberland, who woulda thought!
an extra pair of shoes packed sounds like a good plan :).
jo, those are amazing! i want them for rare trips to tahoe. not necessary, but SO cute!
Love those boots! when it is as cold as it is here, fashion is not as important as warmth!
You will so appreciate the toasty-ness and waterproof come January and February. For work I carry another pair of shoes with me.
For mittens or gloves try a pair with thinsulate and/or fleece lining. Fleece lining is pretty much awesome. Also, I lose mittens like mad so tend to go for those at Khols so I won't be as sad to have to replace them.
i think those are super cute. and they look so great, i want a pair! my feet are freezing as i type this. my hunters aren't quite warm enough with the fleecey lining either. i got ugg boots but i need to weatherproof them before i can wear them.
for gloves, i just got the ugg gloves. LOVE. expensive, yes. warm = DEFINITELY. but a little stiff. but they do soften up. but i'm not a 'lose' gloves type of person. i also like the old navy 2 for $5 variety of fleece mittens. totally loseable, washable, etc.
