Hudson does Halloween, 2011 version

You didn't think we'd leave Hudson out of all of the costuming fun, did you?

Hey gang.

What?! What's on my back?

ARRRRGH. It must be Halloween again.

This is getting downright humiliating.

I mean, seriously?

Give me a break.

Does this hat make my nose look big?
Extreme close-up!!

Oh, this postal outfit ain't too bad.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, Y'ALL.

Melting....

We've got some hardcore melt going on around here, folks! Piles of snow relegated to edges of fields, sides of homes that evade direct sunlight, and we see signs of spring preview in teeny tiny proportions. I even put our snow shovel into the storage closet - uh, is this jinxing it?

As I sit outside and relish in the warm rays, I'm realizing I never posted some of our winter photos.
So here goes:

It'd get like this half an hour after clearing it.
Bust!

Free marshmallow roasting every weekend at our local pond
(which is cleared to skate on).

boiled maple syrup, drizzled on snow, lifted with sticks.
I could have eaten this for every meal of every day of winter.

Ridiculous snow gear = a must.
Good to know for next winter.

We would lose Hudson for a second, but as it turns out, he just liked chasing sleds!
that's him at the bottom with Dean.

Chains down the hill have a 50/50 success rate.

He'd get so super cold after a few hours on the slopes.

But otherwise he seemed to manage pretty well even on the coldest days.

This is how Jamie + Hudson would go get the mail.

If it fell below 19°, we put these boots on him to prevent clumps of
paralyzing ice from forming in between his toes.

Needless to say, we're all ready for spring. Kids and dogs and grown-ups alike are running around like crazy in the what-i-would-have-previously-considered-COLD temperatures. It's easier to get out, to play outside for longer hours, and to feel so much more productive with my days. Yay for spring!!

I love you, dog.

April 7th was Hudson's 4th birthday.

Ethan, our 2 year old neighbor, points to all of the dogs in his books and calls them Hudson. Jamie's classmates beg us to bring him to campus to get their dose of scruffy dogness. And he won over every person at work, making it much easier to justify bringing him to my office multiple times a week. Needless to say, while I'm sure he's wondering where the heck all of his SF dog friends disappeared to, Hudson has acclimated to NH just fine.

I like that you can see me+camera in each of his eyes.

This dog has made us so super happy*!
Let the record show, we still have snow on the ground!

Happy B-day, buddy.

Rain Day.

I had grand scheme plans for today, a Thursday out of the office, away from my Tuck life. It involved catching up on much needed grocery shopping, taking the dog out for a long walk, photographing the wonderment of fall, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. The weather has, unfortunately, taken a literal dump on my plans and I'm relegated to indoor tasks as the stormy rains beat down out there. Hudson just eyeballs the rain and turns back inside; preferring to curl up on a blanket and nap the day away. I literally had to force him outside this morning.

 I feel you, dog.

Instead of all the fun I had planned, I think I'll catch up on some household items. Going to deal with: many reruns of Friday Night Lights, the October issue of Martha Stewart, some hot tea, and staring at the pile of thank you cards we have yet to tackle from our wedding (faux pax to the max). Come bedtime tonight, I have a feeling I'm going to be so super sad this day is over.

Dog Days.

New poop bags, check.
A plushie toy, check.
Bottle of dog shampoo, check.

What am I forgetting?
Aw, crap....

the dog.

Empty aisle.
Where's he hiding?

Sneaky Sneak.

Clearly, this is a face highly amused by shenanigans.

And finally, New Hampster*!

*My buddy, Max, has zero problem pronouncing Jamie & Hudson, but New Hampshire and Leslie totally throw him for a loop. Instead, we are New Hampster and Wessawee! And I love it.

We did it!!
3000+ miles across the country in this big yellow truck.

View of the back of our building.

View from the living room & back door.

It's been what the locals call an "unseasonably warm" with a record 28 days over 95 degrees. Because our new home doesn't come with air conditioning, I'm forced to believe this is an unusual occurrence. Every attempt has been made to survive the first extraordinarily warm weeks: sleeping downstairs, getting a powerful fan, drinking gallons of iced coffee, hitting up the movie theater mid-day, and taking cold showers (me). Our unpacking has been frustratingly slow because I haven't wanted to lift a finger, let alone move things out of boxes. Little by little, it's getting done and we're settling in nicely!

In the meantime, it's been fun to explore our new 'hood.

The New Hampshire version of "shopping".

Loads of farmers markets, but the stands are so super small!
Baskets of 20 tomatoes, 8 stalks of broccoli, etc.
Small-scale farming....weird.

Delicious, crusty bread (note: 8 loaves).

Forget learning how to knit.
Can't I just wrap one of these around my neck?

We discovered some great wood-fired pizza.

Found our local post office and held mail.

And some days we just sit and stare at how large the sky seems here.

These two have been LOVING all the sunshine

All of my target and old navy clothes are madly coming in handy as I haven't lived in weather above 65 degrees in 5 years. San Francisco hasn't prepared me for this many days in a row of sundresses and tank tops! It's been borderline spectacular (aside from the being-sweaty-all-the-time thing).

Cross Country Journey (part 5).

A big, huge thanks to Katherine for housing the three of us for so many days, including an impromptu extra day (y'all know I have a hard time leaving Chicago).  We had a terrific time with you: long chats, yummy meals, STARBUCKS, and even a blind group date (!). Hopefully, you'll get a chance to come up here sometime soon.

Hudson loved the chance to stretch his short legs for a few days in Chicago and take a break from the trembling vibrations of a diesel truck. We took him down the Wiggley Field (dogpark) to run around, take a short dip (he's not a fan of the ole H20), and he even attempted to befriend Katherine's cat every.single.day.

Hudson trying so hard to be friends with Otis

But as much fun as we were having and as heartbroken as it made me, we couldn't stay in Chicago forever....eventually (and reluctantly, on my part) we headed back on the road. A third of the country left to go until we got to our new home...Jamie was eager to get this thing over with.

yay. the truck. again. yay.

And what did we see on this leg of our journey, you may be asking yourself?

the open road.
small homes.
large homes.
factories.
and corn.
lots and lots of corn.

as far as a dog's eye could see.

Umpteenth night on the road: Buffalo, New York.
for the record, we typically made hotel reservations the night prior to our stay. partially to create a destination goal, partially to ensure we were getting a good deal, and partially to stay away from creepy locations.
-------------

Btw, did anyone catch the significance of the "large home"?
Here's another shot:
---------
It's alpha phi, you guys!
Syracuse, NY....aka the first chapter.
  • In 1886 Alpha Phi became the first women's fraternity in America to build and occupy its own chapter house.
  • In 1902, Alpha Phi called the inter-sorority meeting that resulted in the formation of the association now known as the National Panhellenic ConferenceThis was the first intergroup organization on college campuses.
  • The Greek letter Phi is pronounced "Fee". It is a common misconception that this pronunciation is because Phi follows the vowel Alpha. However, the pronunciation of Phi as "Fee" rather than "Fi" actually results from the fact that the organization adopted the Greek rather than anglicized, mainly American, pronunciation of the letter because it sounded more feminine.
My two favorite "Notable Phis":
Alice Waters (Gamma Beta - UC Santa Barbara)
Kimberly Williams (Beta - Northwestern) -  (uh...FATHER OF THE BRIDE!)
