I went-went back-back to Cali-Cali....(part 4)

Eighth stop = Fairfield with the Greens for a week.
quality time with one of my fave kids + his momma, jen.
ahhhh.....nap-times galore.

My two fave Jack quotables:
(in a demanding tone) "mommy, amuse me."
(in a sad tone) "kassar, carry me."

Baby Jimmy @ Jen's PlayGroup BBQ
My friend, Shannon, had twins and this little one looks just like her dad (Jimmy).
Having only met them through f.book, I was stoked to get my hands on their cutie-patootie faces.

Lots of crafting for Becca's wedding

Allergies

It was this week that I suffered from the worst allergies I've ever experienced...ever. Sniffling, sneezing, coughing, itching, horrible eye irritation (feeling completely different from bacterial conjunctivitis aka pinkeye). Luckily, I had a slew of allergy medication with me; unluckily, nothing seemed to bring any semblance of relief. People kept asking if I had been crying, my face was sore from being unaccustomed to so many hours of glasses wear, and I was so fatigued. What was supposed to be a week full of photo taking and exploration with Jen ended up being a week of nightly cold compresses and early bedtimes. Blah.

The worst was the night before Becca's wedding, the night before I was supposed to get to see a large grouping of my CA friends. I had gone to bed super early, leaving Jen+family to catch up on their Survivor/StarTrek shows, and had fallen asleep quickly...only to be woken up by severe eye itching and extreme eye pain. For some reason, I felt compelled to turn on the light and grab a mirror...the pain was pretty intense and my vision felt a little cloudy. To my absolute shock and disgust and fright, the surface of my eyeball skin had BLOWN UP and parts of it were OUTSIDE OF MY EYELIDS. Ya, that's right....OUTSIDE OF MY EYELIDS.

BUBBLES ON BOTH EYEBALLS.
COMING OUT OF MY EYELIDS.

It sent me into immediate panic as I sat on my bed, trying to not cry*, and contemplating the desire to run down the hall to Jen/Pete or to call the 911-eyeball-hotline. Jen had bridesmaid duties beginning a few hours later and because it was a Friday/workday, I had babysitting duties while her husband went to work/gym/etc. Needless to say, I was looking forward to my one-on-one time with Jack and wanted to be a reliable resource for my friends. This eyeball situation was in no way ideal and the timing was horrible.  *I knew crying would have created further edema.

Instead, I took several deep breaths, checked to see that they weren't bleeding, and decided to painfully google solutions to "eyeballs coming out of their sockets" and "blisters on the surface of the eye". There wasn't a huge sensitivity to light so if I tried to ignore the pain of blinking, I was able to look at my laptop. It was a path of least resistance as I knew we had a hugely long day (becca's wedding) the next day. Why I didn't think to call my father-in-law physician in the middle of the night, I do not know. Instead, I piled on some meds and cold compresses, hoping a few hours of sleep would just make it go away.

Denial was a safer place for my brain to be than facing reality of EYEBALL BLISTERS.

The next morning, I was relieved to see the blisters had reduced in size significantly (they at least back inside my eyelids) and while they were still a little painful, it was definitely manageable. My vision was back to normal and I actually felt symptom-free other than the eyeballs (no other allergy symptoms). Jack and I took a morning drive to Sonoma to drop Jen off and we made our way back to their home to hang out before the evening babysitter came over. I waited until the last second to put in my contacts and managed to happily get through the wedding festivities....phew!

Once I was back in Hanover four days later (Tuesday), I was able to receive an in-person consult with aforementioned father-in-law (ahem...allergist...hehe) and identify what had happened.

Prepared to get grossed out by photos of Vernal or Allergic Conjunctivitis (non-contagious):

Some "cobblestone" blistering.
Here's a nice lady's blog....similar thing happened to her.
Does this look human to you? Hmm...might be a dog?

I have a solid game plan in place for when/if it ever happens again and am taking precautionary measures to not let my allergies get to this point again. Eeep!!

Up next: last day in CA with Tara...

Annual summer barbeque @ Jocelyn's parents. This year = Italian Mangia Mangia Mangia Party! You know, because they ran off to Italy for the summer and Party Central was off limits for a bit. So why not come back and throw a glorious party in the sticky heat of the east bay! Lots of food, THIRTY bottles of wine, perfect soundtrack, and good times.

Lunchin' in Napa

I had a chance to meet up with a couple of Greens last week while storming around Napa! Jen and Jack drove up to meet me @ one of my fave quick-napa restaurants (my go-to for yummy chicken noodle soup). Jack was AWESOME throughout lunch, letting us sit there and gab away while only occasionally asking for a teeny bit of cracker or a sip from his bottle or a spoonful of the aforementioned soup. Such a good boy and many kudos to Jen for teaching him "uh-uh, not in your mouth." Too bad Auntie Leslie kept asking him, "what does THAT taste like?" I'm dooming the kid.

Momma + Jack (9 months!)

Storming around a toy store.
This is probably 5 seconds after I asked Jack what a plastic zebra tasted like.

Dreamy Jack-attack.

Suburban Mom for a Day.

My number one buddy.
The Greens had some important stuff to do for a day so in I swooped, honored to have the opportunity for some one-on-one time with my fave baby! I say fave because he's starting to show signs of grins to see me and I think little jack is the first baby I've been able to be this tight with for the first 6months of life. Pretty cool to watch the little man advance in developmental stages and I'm definitely growing so attached to his little noggin.

Oh, and mad KUDOS to all of you moms out there. I mean, like, HUMONGOUS KUDOS. I was with Jack for maybe 6 hours and all I wanted to do afterwards was take a 3day nap. Something I guess you guys can't indulge in, right? ((one day on, three days off...that's not how it works?)) Yes, I recognize this as a sign that we're not ready for kids AT ALL. It was like a real-life, mini Baby Borrowers revelation. Jack and I had a great time while we were together though and I had so much fun playing mom for a day!
Baby secured in stroller with lots of tread on tires = check.
Dog with leash to match jogging stroller = check.
Starbucks in cupholder = check.
Crazy fire came darn close to the Green household.
This is the hill right behind their house!
He's starting to "crawl" and grab.
Hudson was mildly interested in Jack's grasp.
I exaggerate when I say "mildly".
Yay for Aunt Leslie!!
Happiness post-nap!!

4th of July BBQ @ Neudeckers

Again, I hate that I didn't get many pictures, but we had a great time on the 4th at Jocelyn's parents home! They live in on a mysteriously, secret and hidden court in Concord with a HUGE backyard, a kick-ass bbq, and a mean little popcorn machine that Jamie would've tethered himself to if publicly appropriate.

Jocelyn's parents rock. Like, really rock. They're the kind of people who exude party happiness and have an incredible sense of warmth that's immediately appealing. Nobody in the right mind should turn down an invite to their home! Next time, I'll be sure to chronicle our good times with greater accuracy.
Wherever Gage went, Hudson was hot on his heels.
When the dog begged, the little boy obliged and threw him popcorn!
Birthday-girl-Jocelyn looks like she's about to punch Sergio with a Giants foam fist.
v. cute couple!
uhhhh...why is this dog so close to me?
doggie kisses for jack-jack!

New Jersey and Old Friend

Oh, so many things....

First of all, New Jersey totally kicked my ass. Our meetings started at 7:3o am, which meant I was waking up at 3am California time and I'm just not as pretty when waking up that early! I have no idea why they don't take out-of-time-zone travelers into consideration when planning these things. We were stuck in a crappy hotel ballroom until 5:30pm with 5 minute bathroom breaks and 35 minute lunches. There were 200+ people trying to squeeze into hotel lobby bathrooms and through 2 lines of crappy hotel buffet for each meal! If you weren't part of the first 15 people out, you were beyond screwed. I was so grumpy all day long and was basically a zombie in every session. It was particularly brutal when I knew I had to get up super early, but couldn't, because who can go to bed @ SEVEN pm?

The super highlight of the week was grabbing dinner with Debi, her newly marriedness, and her dog, Jackson! We definitely spent a good amount of time trying to identify how we even became friends at camp. Was it REALLY only 8weeks of our lives? We had completely different days off and weekly activities, which are really the only two places to get to know someone @ camp. I must've just been cool-by-association through some second year folks, right? Any insight from those who may know? I distinctively remember crashing at her house post-camp and thinking that she was a friend to keep because Debi not only let me stay with her, but she cooked a huge dinner, AND invited me back that winter after a reunion ski-trip! Who does that?

Anyway, it was great to catch up in person on the stuff that doesn't quite make it onto our blogs. I know, it's practically unimaginable to think that there's anything that I couldn't write about here, right? :)
i LOVED little jackson kisses and great hugs from debs!
Fun recap from her right here. In other news, I got to read the Times cover-to-cover during my flight out and I hit my head really hard when standing up to get to the bathroom on my flight back. The plane went through an air pocket and dropped down, but my body stayed put so I crashed my noggin into an overhead cabin. More on this tomorrow. My camera's finally in with the Geek Squad guys @ Best Buy and I'm supposed to get a call about it in a week...that whole experience made me crave a new episode of Chuck. And in the bad news department, one of my sister's friends got in a terrible skateboarding accident a few days ago, suffered some pretty brutal cerebral edema, and was taken off of life support yesterday. While searching for an article to link here, I found out that Robbins of Baskin-Robbins passed away last month.

Stay posted for other happenings. I can't use all of it in one night, you guys.

Jen + Jack

This is such a fun time in my life. So many babies and for whatever reason my friends let me hold their precious little ones! Baby Jack Green is a total fan of me, grinning from ear to ear when I talk to him in complex sentences. This last visit, I decided he needed to understand a bit about the pythagorean theorem and the anatomy and physiology behind the digestive tract! He was TOTALLY amused and I felt all educational. I'm seriously so educational, you guys.
Hmmmm...Are all of the educational moments
negated by teaching him channel surfing skills?
Obviously, hanging with the parentals was a good time too! Thanks for constantly letting me cut my commute home in half and we'll see you guys on Saturday.
*more updates to come
