We're in full-packing mode here, folks.
All walls have come in a few feet as the apartment is now lined with boxes of all shapes and sizes. Jamie's sister has come and gone, a whirlwind in the kitchen; all cabinets empty and all plates packed. With our official move day exactly one week away, I've been cleaning and packing and otherwise move-preparing from the second I get out of bed until I crawl back in at the end of the night. This process has made me question our moral character, priorities, and overall lack of cleanliness (have we really lived ALL this time with THAT MUCH DUST behind that huge bookcase? ugh).
Why do I keep so many shoe boxes?
They don't even have corresponding lids!
Uh...go ahead and ignore the Jessica Simpson box lid...it's not mine.
While we're mentally preparing for a cross-country drive in a 22 foot truck, I have also been brainstorming strategy to make Hudson's journey as comfortable as possible. For our local long drives, he's typically strapped into a back-seat harness. The big moving truck will not have the luxury of a backseat so I've been looking to get something to ensure safety and comfort for the poor thing.

Problem is, while Hudson is only 20 pounds, he measures at a solid 24 inches long (excluding a crazy long tail). There's no way he'd fit in the Sprokett-sized carseat like the one above!

project.
It had busted zippers; the teeth crumbling with age.
He was NOT comfy like this.
and by extensive, I mean not at all.
The miscellaneous shoe boxes were broken down and taped together
to create a solid base and some walls for the bag.
There were some complicated alterations.
and by complicated, i mean ridiculously easy.
We'll keep his water and food in the external pockets and
I made an inner pocket to keep treats and small toys available.
Seems comfy enough, huh?
We should be able to thread the seatbelt through the two side handles to secure the bag to the bench seat. Then the car harness should have plenty of places to hook onto! Need to keep this scrappy guy as safe as possible.
And to knock off a super old & dated commercial:
One old sports bag..... $0
Some leftover shoe boxes..... $0
Packing tape..... $0 (incorporated into moving material cost)
Hopefully decreasing dog's anxiety level while traveling over 3000 miles in a truck.....PRICELESS.

how do you make a tear with characters?
glad huddy will be safe.
sure the jessica simpson shoes are not yours.
can you make me one for jackson?
you are a genius!
so excited for you guys! moving across the country sounds like a great adventure. hudson looks very snug and secure in that adidas bag. you are a good mom!
that is adorable! good use of random crap!
damn. not only creative but totally geniously creative as well!!!! smart lady!! i'm super impressed (as usual).
on another note: i HATE packing and moving. and really... seriously... how do those nasty dust balls pile up like that?! i dunno how that happens, but every time i've moved (a lot) i find a disgusting amount of dust.
good luck packing up!!!!
I am super impressed...which doesn't say much since you always seem to impress me. :)
Are you guys taking I-40? Please oh please say you are taking I-40 and pitstopping in OKC? Please?
I know it makes no sense whatsoever to come that far south, but you would have free accomodations, free meals, and ridiculously cute nephews to entertain you! :)
chicago, chicago, chicago!!
i think i started collected shoeboxes because i lived with you.
i am going to blame my dust collection on you, too.
I think that your doggie-car-comfort-Adidas-bag is genius! Brilliant! That looks like something that a sponsored athlete may want to transport his or her small pet in. Maybe you could make a deal with Adidas (or the highest bidder) to modify their "seconds" or "slightly defected" bags and sell them? You could expand the branding to use other popular sports bags or the equivalent.
Positive:
1. Adidas is advertising and getting rid of their "excess baggage." (Get it?)
2. Dogs safer everywhere (after reading your friends' description of the car accident, I think that we should lobby for seatbelt/harness requirements for pets ... more on that later).
3. You and Jamie become billionaires and don't have to move to New Freakin' Hampshire! :)
Wow impressive! Good luck with your move and long drive ahead. I'm in the midst of packing up as well...so exhausting
Always in awe of you....always!
@jen = :'( but now it looks like my sad face off'd someone in jail.
@debs = you know i'd make one for you any day! does jackson still chill in the backseat crate?
@katherine, @kerensa, @sol, @jess & @jo = thanks!
@selena = can't we just throw it all in the same box and call it a day?? :)
@kim = i'm loving your newfound love for blogging.
and as far as stopping places across the country, i definitely pushed for adding 5 more days to our drive by going the southern route and stopping at everyone's place (YES to OK!). unfortunately, the 22ft truck put up a major fight and threatened to leave us before the journey even began. annoying!!
but please know you're always welcome in new f hampshire!
I was so excited to tell you about my mom's overpriced dog car seat and send you pictures as Hudson would be model perfect until I realized that you're so creative... you can actually make anything you want out of thin air. sigh. you're amazing. and now you live even farther away. almost in the snow.
