I went-went back-back to Cali-Cali....(part 1)

After living in New Hampshire since late July, I was due for some hard core California time so when Ali offered a flight out in exchange for some day-of-coordinating, I jumped at the chance to get back to my west coast. And since Becca's wedding was in the same month, I decided to make a go of it and just stay out in CA from wedding-to-wedding!

First stop = 4 nights in SF with Todd and Ali.
I got these two nice and married.

I saw this camp friend (Meryd!).
The last time I saw Meryd, Hudson was teeny-tiny!

Got to grab lunch with Annie in my old neighborhood.

Second stop in SF = old co-worker, Chi!
She was hired by Jamie in '05;
just didn't marry him like I did.
They schemed to get me an anniversary gift as I was staying with her that night.
(day after ali's wedding!)

I made sure to get some of my fave pizza at Delfina's.
It went perfectly with my novel.

Saw the new "tax" to support Healthy San Francisco.
Didn't get upset about the extra $1.50.

Third stop in SF = Holly and Arik

Met their new puppy, Butters!

I did a ton of walking, exploring, pointing out changes in SF since last July, and loving up on the sunny/breezy May weather. Living in Ali's neighborhood for 5 days (the Mission!) added another area of SF I can now claim to have experienced like a local....love that each section has such independent identity. Could easily see us back in this town!

Next up: southern california.

Bunten Farm Kitchen - Yum!

One of my already-graduated Tuck friends (also a Jamie) recommended a farm trip for spectacular brunching in the Upper Valley. The selling point was that they had not discovered it until just before moving away from their two years at Tuck and regretted not finding it earlier on. Farm brunching it is! Trish's visit was the perfect opportunity to head north about 1/2hr and enjoy the beautiful Sunday. Sunshine-y, not cold yet, and super bright colors all around.

All dairy products (that includes eggs, right?) are from the farm, they have a mini vegetable garden, bake bread on site, and anything they don't have on hand, they barter from other local farms. Everything was amazing!

Eggs Benedict...mmmmm.
Note: Santa Clause mug in mid-November.
Have a feeling they use this mug year-round.
Check out this handsome guy!
Even the tableware was so farm-y and cute.
Happy Trishy, enjoying her.....?
I don't even remember what she ate.
That's how self-absorbed I was about being on a farm.

And yes, the other selling point was that the farm specialized in MILKING DEVON cows. The five year old in me couldn't help but snicker every second there:

This is a Milking Devon Cow:
She was pretty.
Funny link on the bottom of the Milking Devon Association site
After our leisurely brunch, the three of us headed out onto the homestead and did some major exploring. First up, the cows:
Jamie liked this baby one.
Until it raised its tail and started massively pooping.
Trish stayed on the other side of the fence.
This is as close as she would get!
She didn't come with proper footwear.
I, on the other hand, got ALL up in the cows' business.
Seriously LOVED it in there!
Eat from my hands,  COW.

Viva Mexico!

It is a common misconception among the non-Mexican community in the United States to mistake Cinco de Mayo, or May 5th, with the Mexican Independence Day, which occurs on September 16th;Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, during the French invasion of Mexico. --wikipedia

200 years it's been since Mexico's first day of independence and we were ready to celebrate.

ay, dios mio...

The Tuck invitation was received with the following language:

  • Good music (including, but not limited to: Mariachi, Rancheras, Cumbias, Salsa, Regaetton…)
  • Good food
  • Great drinks (TEQUILA…anything else?)
  • MEXICAN ATTIRE,  MOUSTACHES AND SOMBREROS GREATLY ENCOURAGED.
To me, that meant yet another COSTUME PARTY!!

But how does one dress up for a Mexican costume party? This southern california girl was one step from busting out the black lip liner, contemplating a temporary perm, and going "super-chola" plus weed-dealer. But the chance to offend was just way too high for my comfort level and I didn't quite feel right with that idea.

Instead, I decided to truly celebrate a more positive Mexican staple:

Many have portrayed her in the past and I'm sure many will do so in the future:

Salma Hayek did it.

Seth Rogan did it.

And so did I.

Reaction from someone I used to call a "friend":

Oh, what fun you can have with false eyebrows:

we tried to remain serious all night.
#fail.

The mustaches were a-plenty.

Jorge and Zorro.

Spring breaker + Frida.

Our Irish friend's attempt at a Mexico costume.

Although it may seem like we're going to have to designate an entire closet to costuming, don't worry. We have luckily moved to New Hampshire with ridiculous clothing that pass as costume-wear. It's borderline ridiculous.

Shout Out to the Rosenbaums.

I want to share a v.special family with you today. So many folks have been super welcoming on the east coast, but during the planning process for our big move (read: abandoning all we knew to be home), there was one group in particular that was cheering loudly in our corner...like, with figurative banners, balloons, streamers, and all!

Momma Jane & daughter, Marissa (wife of our best man).

Jamie had come out to Tuck for his application interview back in February '10, but my first time out to New (freaking) Hampshire wasn't until two weeks before our wedding. Our best man + family were living with the in-laws in a Boston suburb at the time (2hrs south of Dartmouth) and were more than happy to take us in for a few nights. While we were there, it was made so clear to me that we could have an automatic built-in family and support system in the Rosenbaums (et al).

Bestman Brook Rosenbaum went to undergrad in Arizona with Jamie. And while they've traveled all sorts of places together since, they haven't lived near each other in quite some time. Work and family has taken Brook all around the world: Stanford, Alaska, Washington D.C., Phoenix (where I met him & marissa), France, and now Massachusetts (did I miss anywhere?). Marissa's folks took them in upon return from France: helping with the kids and allowing them to slowly start house hunting.

This is our buddy, Max.
The one who calls me "Wessawee" and who thinks we live in "New Hampster".

During our stay with them back in April '10, Marissa's mom was such a boost for my self-esteem and made me feel invincible! She stayed up late nights with us, chatting away in the kitchen: melting away all reservations about moving, leaving one's paycheck, and was so confident we would fall in love with the Dartmouth community (she was right). The family environment she maintains in her home is one to be admired and I just love the relationship she has with her kids and grandkids. I feel so comfortable with them.

Marissa has also been incredibly supportive. She was a huge go-to for many pre-wedding relationship discussions, eased my mind about surviving in the snow, and has a great philosophy on life that is refreshingly calm. I mean, she relocated to France WITH A BABY while Brook was in business school, I should be able to do New Hampshire with a dog, right?

I love that I can call this girl a friend and not just the-wife-of-one-of-jamie's-friends-from-college. It's been great to spend time with her and as you can see in the photo below, it's been pretty easy to fall in love with her kids.

Baby Jane.

Now that we're here, they've even made it easier to deal with missing my SF friends because of their warm, welcoming arms. We have already become frequent visitors of their new place in Wellesley and although I have taken very few photos of the home, I'll work on it. In the meantime, I have one preview phrase for you: built-in espresso machine (swoon!).

Here are some other random shots:
I would have DIED for a basement playspace like this as a kid.

Chalkboard wall? Perfect.
Adult sized couch with enough room behind it for a 3 year old? Awesome.
Vintage trunk? So.cool.

Paper roll installation for instant-art.

Comfy rug, tv to watch silly kid movies, toys galore.
Oh and look...a dog.

Last weekend, Jamie and I headed down to give Brook a hand with the kids as Marissa and Big Jane headed off to Chicago. And all I can say is HUGE KUDOS to them for being able to do this parenting business everyday....and to all you parent readers, HUGE KUDOS to you too. I'm 100% certain Jamie shares this sentiment with me as we may or may not have needed a couple of naps upon our return.

I had my hands full most of the time and again, neglected to take any photos. Just know that we were busy with the following activities:
  • train playing,
  • going for walks,
  • swimming and jumping off the diving board,
  • bubbling,
  • napping,
  • eating bbq and many goldfish crackers,
  • reading books,
  • baseballing in the backyard,
  • and convincing Hudson that he didn't need to sleep all night in Max's bed.
It was incredibly fun and I can't wait to head back down there!!

Posting self-portraits on Facebook.
'Cause that's how we roll.
