It is a common misconception among the non-Mexican community in the United States to mistake Cinco de Mayo, or May 5th, with the Mexican Independence Day, which occurs on September 16th;Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, during the French invasion of Mexico. --wikipedia
200 years it's been since Mexico's first day of independence and we were ready to celebrate.
ay, dios mio...
The Tuck invitation was received with the following language:
- Good music (including, but not limited to: Mariachi, Rancheras, Cumbias, Salsa, Regaetton…)
- Good food
- Great drinks (TEQUILA…anything else?)
- MEXICAN ATTIRE, MOUSTACHES AND SOMBREROS GREATLY ENCOURAGED.
To me, that meant yet another COSTUME PARTY!!
But how does one dress up for a Mexican costume party? This southern california girl was one step from busting out the black lip liner, contemplating a temporary perm, and going "super-chola" plus weed-dealer. But the chance to offend was just way too high for my comfort level and I didn't quite feel right with that idea.Instead, I decided to truly celebrate a more positive Mexican staple:
Many have portrayed her in the past and I'm sure many will do so in the future:
Salma Hayek did it.
And so did I.
Reaction from someone I used to call a "friend":
Oh, what fun you can have with false eyebrows:

we tried to remain serious all night.
#fail.
The mustaches were a-plenty.
Jorge and Zorro.
Although it may seem like we're going to have to designate an entire closet to costuming, don't worry. We have luckily moved to New Hampshire with ridiculous clothing that pass as costume-wear. It's borderline ridiculous.
